My buddy Corey's webcomic Seedless is getting trade paper back'd early August, and he asked a couple of his artist friends to hook him up with some chapter covers. Anyways heres mine w/ and w/o the title that Corey added.

Well shit - sorry guys. It's been like forever since I've posted and yet sadly I still can't even really post all that much of what I'm actually doing. At least right after comic con I'll be able to post my 16 page SS comic, as well as a couple of art pieces I did for the art book. This years books are gonna be CRAZY at SDCC. Where as last year we were peddling 1 40 page book - we somehow managed to crank out not one, but TWO 80 page books for this year. Factor in that we now have a 10x10 foot table as opposed to the piddly 8x2 from last year, and we have a recipe for one hell of a july 21st-26th. Pretty stoked.

Anyways there have been a lot of new developments over at JohnnyOutlaw.com that you should really check out. Lots of new gameplay footage and lots of new posts about the innerworkings and process that goes behind making the game. In any case I'll cross post the image I pooped out for the concept art post - our first miniboss - The Duncan.

Other than Johnny Outlaw I've been doing a lot of work in comics lately. Started up a comic project with Mark Andrew Smith lately, and have been secretly trudging along on that. I'm also STILL working on Sharknife Double Z with Corey, and I'm happy to say we're like, 10 pages away from finished :D so stoked. In any case I've been practicing inking for a bit and figured I'd post some of that up as well.

seriously if anyone understands this Final Fantasy X + Wild at Heart crossover I'll be shocked. Please hit me up if you are the one person who this makes sense too haha.

anyways I'll try and post up some stuff from my comic with mark soon, to whet all your appetites, cuz its gonna rock. Other than that I may start saving my warmups, so I'll start compiling and posting those, so while stuff may be NDA, i'll at least have SOMETHING to post in the mean time.

Johnny Outlaw

so I haven't been all that active posting on here. It's not that I'm not working, but more that most everything I'm doing lately is under some sort of pseudo NDA, so I just can't post it yet - but soon, soon.

anyways something I've just been neglecting to update with is stuff for a game I'm working on with a friend. Originally we had planned to do king cool together, but upon realizing we couldnt get a programmer to work on it, we decided to go a more easily programmed route. So philip is learning to program and I'm doing the art. If you haven't already checked it out you really should mosey on over to johnnyoutlaw.blogspot.com. While you're there you could check out all the fan art we've been getting, and submit your own (you really should!!). Anyways heres some shit from over there.

as for why I'm busy other than this I'm currently juggling school, two satellite soda books, my zuda comic, and toning sharknife double z with corey. Sadly I can't really show any of this currently haha, but at least schools almost over which will give me more time to work on all this stuff. Also as soon as april ends I should be free of a lot of obligations, after which I have a few new cool projects that are gonna start up, that I can share more of with you all.

In any case stay tuned and my apologies for the sporadic updates - the posts will pick up again shortly. stay tuned!

Horribly long time no post - so I'm about to drop like 5 posts in a row to make up for lost time :D

This stuff is from a shirt design I had tried to make, but in the end ended up losing the file. In any case I composed the shirt poorly when really i should have made these 3 individual shirts. In any case I could easily just reuse these designs later if i want to give this another shot.

Well heres a bunch of random crap that mostly happened at SDCC, but theres a lot of just mismatched stuff, just felt it all should get posted

I did this one right after barnaby had left the booth. He had just drawn sketchs for us in his book and I felt like trying to mimic his approach. This actually turned out to be very fun and relaxing. Anyways its zoe:
Completely random shit sketches - bottom left stemmed from kris anka drawing a squigly line on the page and telling me to turn it into something, and the bottom right is from Tom fucking up a pose for a naked lady he drew me, so I made something overit during the drink and draw (which was kinda a bust compared to Shane Corn's saturday night extravaganza)

So heres a way late post dump of some environment sketching I've been doing lately. SDCC has kept me from doing more than this, but I figured I'd post it up anyways.

This last one is an interior design for Sean's shop from gunmetal, I still got a lot of work to do on it but I kinda like the direction its going, its just a rough idea for now anyways and I'll expand from here hopefully. Blahhh enviros are tough

Bleed Over

Here's the other two pieces from the SS book I did. The first one's steps can be found earlier, but here's the final product. All in all I like the way it turned out, but it was way overcooked and I don't entirely love looking at it anymore haha - though hopefully people with fresh eyes can still appreciate it fully.

The next piece was a collab with Daniel Stone, and I did it last second because he lost the file and needed it done by the end of that night, so there aren't any steps because I just sat down and cranked this all out in one sitting (I tend to save jpgs to post up for critique between sessions) anyways I love this piece to death, so I was more than happy to finish it up for him.

anyways guys, I'ma start working way more extensively on both gunmetal and the as of yet unnamed king cool game - so expect to see a lot more posts soon (now that I can finally post and finally have free time haha)

Gunmetal starting up...

So I'm starting up designing within the Gunmetal universe again now that the book is finally done, as I need to start building up a portfolio for art center. Anyways I figured first thing I should get hammered out was some kind of logo I could paste onto each piece to get some kind of unity going between each. At the same time I figure the design on the back of Zephyr's shirt needs to be designed along with this and go with the title. I want it to be something both iconic and simple (for ease of drawing since it'll be in every shot of him from behind, and I don't want it drawing too much attention due to detail either).

here are some drawings from gunmetal that I had done in class the last few months before summer but never bothered to scan up till now - anyways expect all of these characters to get character sheets and weapon sheets made up for em (illustrations too :O):
this is just trying to work out the inner workings of zephyrs fists, still not happy with this but trying to understand how this would work helps me a lot (and also i want it to actually make sense to me, so it could work, and so i can break it apart whenever and the interior of it will be planned out, and how it would break/get injured):
These I found when looking through an old notebook for notes from last year. These are all over a year old, but I figured they were fun to look at together, so I threw them into one piece and it kinda will help show the evolution of the characters and stuff as they develop later (read soon):

So the Satellite Soda book is finally done and damn does it look great. I can't wait for SDCC so I can post up all the final pieces that went into it. Anyways the last piece I posted up ended up not making it in, so I can post up the finals for it. I was partial to the peach toned one I had done anyways...

but technically random space chick is supposed to have blue skin - so here's what it woulda actually looked like had it gone in - so it wasn't such a big deal.

So the piece I posted last time started so so simple haha - was just gonna be a pinup of badfunk posed all slick like haha.

that of course got jumped on for a) boring pose and b) fuck pinups - so I came up w/ somewhat more of a story with the piece, but the piece was too calm, too boring, too confusing. Idea was basically to have bombface tagging badfunks back though, and that was the idea to stick with.
My first thought was just change the perspective ya? That makes for good compositions right? (FUCK NO). Anyways I impressed myself with the perspective on this so I actually liked it until stone snapped me back into reality, as the up shot doesn't really help the piece at all and just adds more questions. The mirrored poses don't help either haha
What ended up being done based on some drawovers from stone was the idea to stack 3 of them ontop of eachother in a comic back sort of style. I have lines for the final one but I figured I'd include this one with a different last panel instead. Actually looking at it now I COULD change it to something like this to remedy a lot of the problems the piece is currently having... but then i lose my great crushed wall... I hate this piece ahah

Learning Comp 4 and Awesomeness

So no actual drawings from me this time, but just some learnings from a conversation with stone (figured I'd share)

So anyways I've come to notice through doing these studies that the negative space of a composition makes up a lot of what makes the composition. In fact paying attention to making interesting negative shapes will most likely lead to a good composition (just because you wont have a single negative shape. Let me explain - if you were to draw a picture of just a character in a white space with no cropping (ie we see the whole figure) then the negative shape would just be the negative of that - which isn't very interesting, just repetitive. This kind of composition is more informative and thus useful for concept art and the like, but rather useless when you get into anything illustration related.

So something I had noticed with the negative shapes is that creating overlap and crops within the figures is in part in order to break up the negative shapes. So rather than having just one negative shape if we were to crop tighter on a figure we may divide that negative space into a couple of littler negative shapes. In this same way we can get the small medium large shape relations that we get with the positive shapes that make them so interesting.

Stone drew this up for me in response to that - this is basically showing that the negative shapes purpose is simply to create an interesting shape. In the example we are looking through an alleyway, but rather than making just two rectangles for the buildings on either side we can switch up the negative shape by adding some kind of variation to them, thinking of more interesting shapes than just the basics essentially (or rather combining the essentials in interesting and new ways).

The next piece is to explain flow and rhythm. We want to avoid using too much evenness in forms and shapes, and thus the idea is instead to vary the sizes and lengths of shapes in order to create something more interesting. It's almost like creating a rhythm within the flow of the shape - like in music - that adds more flavor to it. Rather than playing 3 quarter notes we could swap that up into different holds on the note to make something more jazzy or more smooth. I have to test out just how far I can push the boundaries of anatomy with this though.

and I learned a valuable lesson about trying to make quick fixes on the face w/ eyepatches hahaha

Learning Composition 3

Another batch of gurren lagaan

ordered left row down then right row down - so the first would be simon punching forward and 2nd would be kittan and yoko standin w/ daryl and gimmy.

1. small shape with the fist and large shape with the head - then medium with the body again. The positive shapes take up about 2/3rds the panel, which seems to be the case with most of these. Prolly better to have 2/3rds either positive or negative - I feel like half and half would be dull and strange.

2. diagonals woo. Notice how kittan and daryl (gimmy?) kinda meld together into one form that divides the panel. Anyways we've got two figures in the foreground and two in the mid. Their positioning and posing (along w/ their clothing) is making for some very strong silhouettes that are going on to make some strong negative shapes.

3. Once again taking up about 2/3rds the panel - very action packed and interesting shapes w/in it but we have a lot of flesh stuff, like along the leg and the missile crotch that keep it from getting too crazy. Theres a bunch of negative shapes in this one as opposed to #1 that just has 1 negative shape - dunno how this factors in yet but it may be worth note.

4. A down shot up. Theres also a ton of circles flowing around throughout this one which is why I included them in the composition sketch. Note the size variations in them, and the largest circle of all being the overall placement of the figures (or rather the placement of their negative shape - makes an arc).

5. A very symmetrical shot, which I'm assuming makes an attempt at being broken up by the a-symmetrical waves and spirals of energy shooting around. I guess you can't have every shot be a-symmetrical or it would rob it of its uniqueness? Not sure yet on this one.

6. I like this one a lot. Our large figure is in the background taking up a good 2/3rds the panel and our smaller figure is in the foreground. He is made up of the small and medium pieces as his legs get much larger as they pull down towards the camera. Very cool diagonals on this as well. Also all the negative shapes make arrows pointing us in towards the larger figure in the background - seems like good guiding of the eye.

7. Warped perspective on this one. Very cool figure in the foreground taking up like 1/3rd the panel. Then our eye is guided back w/ the rows of spirals to the gurren lagaan, which while centered in the panel, isn't symmetrical (though isn't fighting hard to avoid that.) I really love warped perspective though :]

8. Tons of tiny shapes amidst some large and medium ones that hold the entire thing together. As a result we get a lot of cool negative shapes in there as well. Also note the curve of the body on this one. it takes what would be a dull pose if that head was looking forward and adds dynamics by having him look the other way. Gives it a much more life like feel.

So I'm super busy for the next month working on a secret project for SDCC (at least I think its secret? I'll look into that, maybe I can be posting stuff up...) Anyways with that school and a comic I'm working on eating my time (and none of which I can really SHOW here - though maybe I'll post up the comic roughs...) I won't be able to post much for a bit. This'll prolly change right around the end of april when I'll be doing all stuff for myself and mainly working on solid finished designs for Gunmetal and Cavity (new project I'm working on for a friends movie script) as well as sprite work and concepts for a game I'm making with two friends (one scripting the other a little bit of everything). Regardless I got a lot of work ahead of me, but it looks to be fun.

So I've been pretty busy with school lately so I never had a chance to update (and more importantly, to scan, as I don't have a scanner up at school). So sorry for the lack of updates, and I think I'll be trying to get at least a weekly update in.

anyways this is a random gag comic strip me and a friend were thinking of doing based on our janitor - it would basically be him thwarting crimes by telling wholly inappropriate stories. The best part is it writes itself because this guy has told us WAY too much stuff that can't be unheard.
This second is just some quick designs for characters from a comic practice deal I'm doing with the same guy. He's writing me quick short stories between 5-20 pages and I'm making all the dialogue + frame decisions just to get more practice. I'll update with a rough copy of it soon.

I was also considering trying to make a silent comic to go along with the song Boombox by Andy Samberg - so I was trying to create a fun cartoon samberg for it haha, I like the ones that look nothing like him though...
Was trying to make a cool banner for this blog, dunno if i'd actually use that though haha.

So new blog so I'll start with some recent stuff and hopefully get to a scanner more frequently so I can post up some more stuff. Anyways, here's some stuff from the story I'm currently working on - I'm working on it partially to try and start a comic with it and also because I need to start designing within a singular world in order to apply for the entertainment design program over at ACCD.
